James Blencowe was born in Melbourne in 1871 and came to New Zealand in 1895, settling in Rotorua the following year. He worked first as a carpenter, but later established a photography business in Arawa Street. He retired to Auckland in 1941, but had returned to Rotorua by the time of his death in June 1945. He was buried in Rotorua Cemetery, at section 6, lot 11. Probate records for him are held at Archives NZ (Auckland) (no.6532). His wife, Eleanor Maud (Young) died in October 1953. WW1 nominal rolls give the following details - BLENCOWE James Rasdell; Second Reserves; Last NZ Address - Arawa St, Rotorua; Occupation - Photographer; Classification A [single].
