Description
This re-modelled fawn felt hat has a rounded crown and rolled brim. It has a large burgundy felt bow and a decorative motif of punched holes and applied felt 'dots'. It has been finished with a burgundy grosgrain ribbon.

Norma re-modelled this felt hat to wear at her father's funeral in 1955. She travelled from Rotorua to Oamaru by train. She explained: "I had a burgundy coat and I needed a hat. So I created this from two old ones. I steamed the brim to roll it. When the train stopped I steamed it on the steam outlets, and when the train took off again, I sewed that part. Next station I repeated the process." The dots that decorate the bow were originally punched from the brim before Norma left home.
